About Ano Pedina
In the heart of Central Zagori, on the southwestern slopes of Mount Tymfi and north of Mitsikeli, at an altitude of 960 meters, lies the village of Ano Pedina. Its central location on the map of Zagori, combined with its traditional character, well-preserved houses and mansions, excellent tourist accommodations, and the tranquility that prevails, are the elements that justify its tourist appeal.
Ano Pedina, set against a lush mountainous landscape and featuring beautiful Zagorian architecture, is the perfect destination for an escape into a different setting. It is a charming village with impressive mansions, churches, and squares, welcoming residents, and numerous musical and cultural events throughout the year. The village has been designated a traditional settlement, as it preserves its characteristic Zagorian architectural style.
Highlights of Ano Pedina
A few days in Zagorochoria are enough to breathe fresh air, escape from the “concrete civilization,” and allow your senses to soar.
- Vikos Gorge: 12 km long, starting from Vikos and ending at the village of Kipoi. It is considered the deepest gorge in the world! Crossing it takes about 5 hours. Visitors can enjoy the gorge from Oxia and the Monastery of Agia Paraskevi (Monodendri), as well as from Beloi (Vradeto).
- Dragon Lake of Tymfi (Gamila): Located at an altitude of 2,100 m on Mount Tymfi. Formed by glaciers about 10,000 years ago. A unique alpine landscape with permanent water and rare alpine newts. Accessible after a 4-hour hike from Mikro Papingo.
- Stone Bridges: Including Kokkoris Bridge, Kalogeriko (Plakidas) Bridge (three-arched), and the bridge of Voidomatis near Kleidonia, believed to have been built before 1700.
- Natural Pools: A rare natural phenomenon where the Rogovou stream narrows, forming a small canyon with natural swimming pools, located between Megalo and Mikro Papingo.
- Vradeto Steps (Skala Vradetou): A stone path of 1,200 steps carved from local stone. Until 1970, it was the only connection between Vradeto and Kapesovo (about 40 minutes hiking).
- Stone Forest: Located on the road between Monodendri and Oxia. Limestone rock formations resembling stacked stone slabs shaped by erosion over millions of years. Offers stunning views of Vikos Gorge.
- Waterfalls in Iliochori: Impressive waterfalls worth visiting.
- Sarakatsani Settlements (Gyftokampos): A reconstructed site showcasing traditional semi-nomadic life, including huts, sheepfolds, looms, dairy facilities, and more.
